We want to do a hard pruning of shrub roses in late winter, which in Chicago is March. We prune roses back to 12 inches tall. However, if you missed that pruning window wait for your first round of flowers to come out and fade then put a round of fertilizer on the roses and cut the canes back. I wouldn’t cut them back to 12 inches this late in the season but I would take about a third or even half the length of each stem if you need to.
