Comment “POSTER” for the link to 12 syllable rules and a syllable division mat. Teaching syllables enhances decoding skills (divide bigger words into smaller chunks), and encoding skills (to spell word correctly), hence improve reading fluency and spellings. Lion is not one syllable even though 2 vowels are together like boat. It’s li/on. The word “gather” is gath/er and not gat/her as you don’t split the digraph.
