In 1974 Tropical Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin, taking 71 lives and destroying most of the city's buildings. Although Tracy crossed the coast as a Category 4, it was a small, slow-moving system with the radius of gale force winds only 46 km—one of the smallest cyclones to ever impact Australia.
